The Double Hung: An
easy choice for window replacement
The
double hung window is probably the best known of all replacement
windows. It consists of two vertical sashes that slide up and down
in independent grooves. The construction of the window makes it
possible for half the window space to be open at a time.
The popularity, ease
of maintenance and care, and the durability of double hungs has
contributed to the development of cosmetic variety, such that double
hung windows are available in nearly any size, in multiple colors,
and even with a variation of shapes. Are you tired of the traditional
rectangular look? You can purchase your windows with rounded tops—called
radius tops, or you can install a round or half-round transom above
the rectangular window. Radius windows are made both with radius
panes and with rectangular panes in a frame that has a curved top
to give the window the rounded look. Furthermore, if the your old
window frame is in good condition, there may be no need to replace
it as double hungs are made to fit into the old frame.
Most double hung windows
are also double glazed, which improves the cooling and heating efficiency
of your home. Maintenance is made simple with vinyl, easy to clean
sashes that tilt in and can be removed.
You will want to purchase
your new windows from a reputable dealer. The supplier directory
lists over 300,000 registered importers, exporters, manufacturers,
retailers, and wholesalers of double hung windows and their associated
hardware. While it is relatively easy to find "cheap," it is worth
your while to spend a little time to ensure the quality of a window
that you would like to last as long as the house itself. Look first
of all for a well-known, reputable manufacturer. Then look for a
dealer in your area, or at least close enough to be able to make
a reasonable delivery. Finally, if you need to have the windows
installed, you want a dealer/installer who will do quality work
in a timely fashion for an agreed upon price. Ask around. Watch
for locations in your area where other people are installing new
windows. Ask about the service and the quality of the work.
If you plan to install
your new windows yourself, be sure to find out exactly what measurements
your dealer needs so the correct size can be ordered. Search for
quality windows that are easy to install and have clear, easy to
follow directions.
With the variety of windows
available, your new double hung windows will be easy to find. With
a little care and advance planning, they will also be easy to install
and will be enjoyed for many years to come.
